Ffestiniog is the oldest independent railway company in the world, originally built to transport slate from the quarries in the mountains. The historic train from Blaenau to Porthmadog, climbs 700 ft from sea level into the mountains through the Snowdonia National Park, passing tranquil pastures magnificent forests, lakes and waterfalls. Portmeirion is a private coastal village of pastel coloured homes and restaurants arranged around plazas and gardens with lovely views. Seventy acres of sub-tropical woodland gardens surround the village and you can take a 20 minute little train tour of the woodland, which has a photo stop at the Chinese Lake and Castle.
